| A true Italian family enterprise, QS Group S.p.A. began life as Esimec, founded in 1973 by Giovanni Porcarelli, who is still president of the company today. It started by specialising in the design and manufacture of sheet uncoilers and straightening machines for the white goods industry, which remains a core market for QS Group. In 1996, the then Esimec began acquiring a number of companies from within the industry, thus adding expertise to its portfolio in PLC and PC software writing, in the design and manufacturing of material handling systems, of polyurethane injection tools and presses; and in the design and manufacturing of vacuum thermoforming tools and machines. In 2001 Esimec and its sister companies merged to become QS Group S.p.A. Today, the company, which remains 100% family owned, employs 250 staff and achieves an annual turnover of approx. €35m. Silke Humphrys spoke to Sales Director, Michele Porcarelli. |
“We are continuously working on all fronts in order to expand our presence abroad, including the development of joint ventures and the creation of new subsidiaries and sales offices in many developing countries in order to compete with local companies and to offer better services to our customers. We are exploring moving some of our production facilities to countries such as China, Brazil, Poland and Turkey, in order to remain close to our customers and maintain our competitive edge. Our R&D facilities will remain in Italy. One of the main problems with such a move is finding qualified staff, as we operate in a niche market with highly specialised employees. In order to tackle this problem we are shortly going to host training for abroad collaborators staff at our plant in Italy.” Michele Porcarelli

In addition to providing turnkey manufacturing solutions for the white goods industry, QS Group has also become an important supplier for other sectors, including pharmaceutical, food & beverage, and metal and mechanical industry in general, making it a leader in the field of industrial automation.
Five divisions make up the pillars of QS Group:
Turnkey Solutions for Industrial AutomationQS Group boasts customers from many different sectors, however its core business remains the white goods industry. It counts among its customer base the most renowned brands of that market, including Electrolux, Bosch Siemens, Liebherr, Whirlpool and many others. One of the company’s main strengths and differentiating factors is undoubtedly its ability to supply complete turnkey projects. With its five divisions it is able to completely satisfy its customers and to provide them with customised solutions. Starting from customers’ specifications and adding its know-how and wealth of experience, it can create tailor-made products which completely meet its customers’ needs. In the white goods sector, for example, it can provide all the equipment needed to manufacture an entire product range. For the customer this means having just one supplier to interface with and achieving benefits in terms of cost and time savings. QS Group is one of very few companies in the world that is able to supply complete turnkey solutions to the household appliances industry.
Globalisation and DiversificationOne of the key challenges facing QS Group today is that of company globalisation, which creates obstacles to overcome such as increasing costs and competitiveness. On the other hand, becoming a global enterprise also represents an opportunity for growth and seizing new opportunities, as Sales Director Michele Porcarelli explains: “We are continuously working on all fronts in order to expand our presence abroad, including the development of joint ventures and the creation of new subsidiaries and sales offices in many developing countries in order to compete with local companies and to offer better services to our customers. In order to tackle this problem we are shortly going to host training for abroad collaborators staff at our plant in Italy.”
Another new challenge the company is facing now is market diversification. At the present time 80% of its products are destined for the household appliance industry, whilst the remaining 20% is for other sectors, such as automotive, food, furniture, and pharmaceuticals. An important goal is therefore to balance the weight of all of its target sectors by increasing company turnover. Mr Porcarelli explains: “In other words, this means maintaining the leadership in the household appliance industry and increasing, at the same time, our presence in all other sectors. In order to achieve this, we have to continually work on developing new products and this is possible because we prioritise investment in R&D to ensure we are always one step ahead of the competition. Our reputation is based on developing innovative machines for the white goods industry that enable our customers to produce and maintain products with an excellent price/quality ratio.”
As regards the future of QS Group, steady growth is paramount, by increasing its presence in other countries, particularly through sister companies. In addition, one of its main goals is to continue to promote technological advancement and innovation. QS Group has several patented solutions and is always looking to improve its products and solutions further. Mr Porcarelli concludes: “Creating patented solutions is an important way of achieving our goals and keeping our customers satisfied. Always searching for new patented products means that we are able to support our clients by helping them improve the quality of their products. And we are very proud of the results we are achieving in this field.”
